Hair transplantation robot fight hair

Robots fight hair loss

For the First time in history an automated Robot application is able to perform one of the tasks involving an FUE hair transplantation.

The Robotic hair transplantation system has been developed in the United States and is a high tech, high end solution that can be used to extract hairs from the scalp.
The system is a development that is linked to the increasingly popular FUE hairtransplantation method. This hair transplant routine does not require the usage of scalpels. Instead it uses tiny needles to remove hairs from the donor area. These micro needles leave virtually no visible scarring and the healing time is extremely fast. Up to today the process of hair follicle extraction has been done completely manual.

Can the Robot extraction match the human hand eye coordination?

Although the Robotic system is truly innovative, it needs further enhancements since at present it does not provide any advantage over human extraction routines.

Here is a list of issues that should be addressed in the next generation of Robotic extraction.

  • Speed: The system and the patient need to be prepared in a special way. This takes quite some time and still requires a lot of human interaction.
  • Overall extraction speed is far slower than what a trained FUE extractor team can achieve. Humans can often work as a pair or dual extraction method, thus doubling the extraction speed.  However for beginner FUE hair transplant practitioners the Robot could provide helpful.
  • Easy extraction: A Robot can not feel and understand the skin and the direction and splay of the underlying hair follicles. As such transition rates will be quite high for patients with curly hair, irregular hair implantation.  Therefore the Robotic FUE system is only approved for use on patients with straight hair that is dark brown or black in color.
  • Tools too big: As for now the ideal needle size for performing FUE is generally accepted to be 0.70-0.90 mm. The Robot now uses 1.2 mm internal diameter needles, which is not considered to be acceptable by most hair transplant physicians.

In general a modern FUE hair transplantation requires a highly experienced team. The extraction process is just one part of the procedure. Artistic design skill, creating recipient sites, implantation, all these steps are still in the hands of humans in order to achieve consistent naturally looking hair restoration results.
